Im married to a bold and beautiful soul, Amy B-Love, she made an honest plea to white family and friends to speak out against racism, instead of remaining indifferent or uneducated (about racism in all its forms and white privilege). She then added an explanation as follows: I have to have conversations with my son of color based on what is really happening on the streets of this country even if it isnt the world I want to see. I have to acknowledge that people see his color....and they dont see it as beautiful like I do and those that care about him do. I have to have conversations about not smarting off to people because he could get himself seriously hurt one day simple because of the color of his skin and I have to watch tears run down his face because he gets it (but doesnt REALLY get it). I have to teach him a different kind of respect than I have had to teach my other children because they have white skin. This is a kind of reality that doesnt go away because we are good parents or because we are raising good kids. It is reality because it exists... I just want to delve a little deeper because nothing will change until white allies understand the systemic issues of race in this country. As white people, we must be allies because we can never fully understand or deny its realities.
