Im no bigot nor intolerant of others religions. The separation of church and state in democratic countries has assured inhabitants therein of peace, progress and happiness in mutual respect and co-existence. Unlike in other miserable countries where religious intolerance abounds and causes people to oppress and slaughter one another like savages and troglodytes. Having said that, it behooves me to observe that religion organizations should not be allowed to exercise excessive entanglements in political matters because they have tax-exempt status. Theyre supposed to devote their energies toward spiritual upliftment, not mundane politics. What are considered excessive entanglements b in political affairs? Well, its very obvious:indorsing and insisting on your church members to vote for certain political personalities in elections. But can the government prevent religions from doing that? No. The government should respect freedom of conscience and not meddle in religious doctrines of any sect , unless it promotes beliefs contrary to law, morals or public policy, like polyandry or human sacrifice. But what can the government do if religions meddle excessively in politics, like dictating whom to vote for? Easy. Revoke their tax exemptions. If they want to enter politics, they should pay the price , play by the regular rules and not gain undue advantage over other political players in the arena by way of tax exemptions. Thats the law in the USA. Here in America, any religious group which endorses any candidate in election gets its tax exemption privileges investigated, then revoked by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Simple, right? I dont understand why we cant implement the same rational policy in the Philippines. For too long have some religious sects abused their tax exemptions and excessive political entanglements.
