Im truly glad whenever I see people actively fighting to save lives. Benevolent human spirits united in action: HELL YEAH! But if I may once again risk getting hit by the truck of the sometimes unpopular thought, Hey, should we stop and think this through first? (Preview: I also say something against the drought outcry that I initially shared.) First: Surprising numbers I learned in this articles thorough overview: ALS: 12,000-30,000 afflicted. Alzheimers: ~5.2 million Diabetes: ~25.8 million (Estimated numbers of Americans.) It must be noted ALS is almost always terminal in 3-5 years, but Im not claiming any one of these is worse than the others--theyre all terrible in different ways. (Personally, Alzheimers has hit me harder through my family.) Second, if anyone feels a fad component to all this, that could result in a big short term wave of support then long-term lack of it. Sustained philanthropy is the most important to research and hardest to achieve. (For many, donating to one charity means less/not donating to others. Money is limited for the vast majority.) Finally, I see people all for it, opposed by people who thinks its an abhorrent waste of water during our drought, and I feel alone in the middle saying, if you do it, rock on, just please do it in a drought-friendly way (standing in a pool or area you normally water, in a wading pool to reuse for gardening or laundry). Or, people could use a Glass of ice water. And how much water is *really* being wasted by this? I bet theres bigger water wasting prevention awareness and conservation tips to draw attention to.
