Im very annoyed by this eNCA coverage about the Chinese man, Gui Weng, who is being celebrated for speaking isiZulu. What kind of nonsense is this? Youre a Chinese coming all the way from China to do business in a township in KwaZulu Natal, what exactly is exceptional about you learning how to communicate with natives in a language they are familiar with, given that your bread is buttered by their labour and hard-earned money? This excitement that we tend to have when non-Blacks speak our native languages - fluently or not - is rather pathetic. Ive never seen a Black person being celebrated and paraded for having a good command of the English language, despite how well some people speak it, often, even better than their White counterparts. It is EXPECTED that we must know this language, because it is expected that if were to seek employment or communicate in global business or politics, English is the medium. So naturally, if you are White or Chinese or whatever else, and you need to communicate with natives whom you do business with, or most pointedly, whom you sell to and exploit, you must communicate in a language they can hear, and that means you must bend over backwards to be accommodated. South Afrika has a population comprising of over 80% Black people. Can we stop jumping up and down celebrating a minority learning our languages and coming to our communities! They arent doing us a favour. This house niggerism that portrays Black humanity as a figure of pathos is distasteful.
