Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah- heir and successor of the legacy of Hazrat Ali and Abdullah Ibn Masoud radhi Allaho anhuma Imam Abu Hanifa r.h was born in the year 80 A.H in Kufa, a town in Iraq built during the khilaafah of Umar radhi Allaho anho. More than a thousand sahaabah came to Kufa , amongst them twenty four who had participated in the battle of Badr including , Hazrat Ali, Abdullah bin Masoud, and Saad bin Abi Waqas r.h. The prophet sallallaho alaihe wasallam once said about the participants of Badr, لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ اطَّلَعَ علَى مَن شَهِدَ بَدْرًا فقال : اعملوا ما شِئْتُمْ فقد غفرتُ لكم . صحيح البخاري Allah looked at those who participated in Badr and said, you may do as you please , I have already forgiven you. Both Ali r.a and Abdullah ibn Masoud r.a were considered to be amongst the most learned of the companions and they both spent many years of their life in Kufa especially Abdullah ibn Masoud r.a who was sent there by Umar r.a as a teacher at the request of the people of Kufa. So when Imam Abu Hanifah r.h was born , learnt and grew up in Kufa , he became the heir and successor to the knowledge of these distinguished companions. He also travelled to Basra, Makkah and Madinah , learning from the most prominent Tabiee scholars ( direct students of prominent sahaabah) including Ata bin Abi Rabah, student of Abdullah bin Abbaas r.a in Makkah and Mohammad bin Ali ( imam Baqar) who also learnt from many sahaabah including Abdullah bin Umar r.a. While Imam Abu Hanifah r.h learnt from these and other famous Tabieens , he himself was also a tabiee as he had the good fortune of seeing Anas ibn Malik on a number of occasions as is mentioned in Tadhkiratul- Huffaadh by Imam Shamsuddeen Dhahbi r.h. Some scholars have stated that Imam Abu Hanifa r.h learnt hadeeth and teachings of Islam from almost four thousand scholars. No wonder he was considered by Imam Shamsuddeen Dhahbi as Al- Imam al Aadham, the greatest amongst the imams in this Ummah. By Shaykh Mumtaz ul Haq
