In 1984 singer/song writer Leonard Cohen released an album which included his composition titled “Hallelujah.” The original is a melancholy, contemplative piece which reflects a struggling mind. A little bit ago the musical group “Cloverton” released a rewrite of that song with a Christmas message. In November a friend posted a link to the Cloverton performance and a man commented negatively, but respectfully, that he liked the original and felt the rewrite was disrespectful to Mr. Cohen. He anticipated that his comments might stir ire and asked that replies not be unkind. My respectful reply included this: “I agree with you that the original lyrics have a sad sense to them; I noticed that the first time I heard them. However, modifying the song to give it a different flavor is indeed very natural to a Christian songwriter because when a person enters a Christian relationship with God much of the sadness we experience is replaced with a deep-seated joy. I DO NOT mean to imply that the Christian life is free from troubles; we have our share and even a few new ones. But when we have confidence in the goodness and faithfulness of God our trials and struggles take on a different perspective.” Cloverton’s rendition is indeed special. I trust it will be a Christmas blessings to you, a refreshing view of the amazing event we celebrate during this Christmas season, and a reminder of the truly awesome plan God began to unfold that Holy Night.
