In Nehemiah chapters 8 and 9, we read that Ezra the priest read to a large group of people from God’s Word from daybreak until noon. The people stood as Ezra read from God’s Word and they listened attentively. The people responded to God’s Word by raising their hands, shouting “Amen!” and weeping and bowing down in worship. Later that month, the people again gathered and listened to the Word of God and worshipped the LORD, once again from daybreak until noon. How does our interest, devotion and reaction to God’s Word, the Bible, compare to this? How long can we read or hear the Word of God before our attention drifts away? Do we start looking at the clock and getting restless if the pastor "preaches too long?" Do we respond to what we read and hear from the Bible with worship, adoration, honor? Do we respond to the Word of God much at all? Are we brokenhearted over knowing how much we disobey God?
