In light of events at UCSB, I really hope the UC system begins to put a greater focus on mental health. I once was in need of fairly long term therapy here at UCSD, but was told I was out of luck at CAPS because they simply did not have the resources to accommodate me after 3 or so 30 minute visits. Luckily I had access to a car, the free time, and the money to drive off campus to get the help I needed, but what about people who arent so privileged to have the time or resources to help themselves in this way? And when I was lucky enough to talk to someone at CAPS, there was a ridiculously long questionnaire on a computer that must be filled out every single time before seeing someone asking if youre a danger to others over and over again and asking you to rate your bad feelings and then to be told something along the lines of hey youre at a 50% risk of this, a 20% risk of this, and a 10% risk of this, etc. look at this chart regarding your mental state, made me extremely uncomfortable and discouraged from helping myself at that time. I dont know how to fix the problem at CAPS, but I hope more attention and resources are placed on this critically important system, not only to prevent the tragedy of people hurting others or themselves, but also the tragedy of anyone falling through the cracks.
