In my opinion, the next great ill facing the world is fundamentalism of all kinds. The fundamentalists are extremely motivated and they have a long range vision. The rest of us wont (seemingly) manage to come up with a long range, comparable vision until our rights have been so destroyed that we can finally feel the impact of this. I often point to the radical Christian right as a model for the rest of us in one important regard: staying power. These people set out to take over the government and impose their morals on the rest of us. They have sustained their movement for decades with the kind of fiery commitment that gets things done. Their example is no less powerful because I abhor the outcome. Now, what are we going to do? To put this is greater context, what the radical Christian right has done is infiltrate the halls of power while those of us who value freedom have been busy decrying power itself. I have some news about that: when you eschew power, you eschew your ability to get things done. Time to storm the halls of power and take our seat at the table instead of being all counter culture and anti-government. The government isnt the problem.
