In praise of #Multicultural #ChildrensBooks this holiday season: Here’s what you’re really giving when you give the gift of a multicultural children’s book. You are supporting a strong but woefully tiny part of publishing that needs every advocate possible. You are giving oxygen to stories of underrepresented or poorly represented groups of people. You are giving that child a mirror and a window, tales in which they can both see reflections of themselves and a peek into the experience of a different child. You are contributing to a global awareness and appreciation that is crucial for a well-informed and rounded little generation. You are making the world a better place. For a holiday themed book, I would also add THE ROAD TO SANTIAGO (bit.ly/1CDaF5V), a Christmas story set in Cuba in the 1950s that I had the privilege to edit many years ago at Lee & Low Books. From Readers To Eaters I would especially recommend A Moose Boosh: A Few Choice Words About Food (bit.ly/1om889T), a playful book of poetry celebrating #FamilyMeals and #FoodTraditions that would be wonderful for sharing at the dinner table.
