In remembrance of my Aunt Ann Harris who was born on this day. Anne Harris was an innovative Fashion Designer who followed her dreams despite the obstacles faced by a Black woman in the 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. Her first dress shop was opened in Harlem in 1934, she was very proud of her Harlem roots and her heritage but she wanted to be recognized first and foremost as a Designer; not a Black Designer or a female Designer, a Couture Designer. We are still struggling to be recognized for our Art without being categorized by or color or our gender. Aunt Anns fashion shows were the first integrated shows in NYC. and was attended by notable Fashion Designers like Oscar de la Renta, she also visited the Paris shows. Aunt Ann believed that some of her work had been replicated on the runways, despite her frustration and lack of financial compensation, she still felt as an Artist it was a compliment. Heres to a very special woman, to her pioneering spirit, courage and resilience, she was ahead of her time. I have always admired your unique talent and love of family. I learned a lot from you, I miss your guidance, you were both my Aunt and my Godmother. Lots of love your nephew Bobby.
