In the new year, as we all make efforts to live more - TopicsExpress

In the new year, as we all make efforts to live more intentionally, with more purpose, and with renewed vigor towards our goals, we are introducing Whats your Why? Wednesday. We will explore the question Why Kosama?, and were going to start with our coaches, and why they are so passionate about what they do at Kosama every day, through their personal fitness stories. The first story well share here is from Coach Katie. There are some fitness professionals who have been athletes their entire lives. My fitness story is most certainly not a lifelong one, as fitness has only really been a part of my life since 2010. I was always at least somewhat overweight growing up. Sometimes I was moderately active, but other times sedentary, and my nutritional habits included much more fast food than they should have. My weight and accompanying health concerns kept me from fully enjoying life with my growing family; playing with my children exhausted me, and I was always self-conscious. My pregnancy with my younger son was high risk because of my blood pressure, and I spent more than eight weeks on complete bedrest. I still failed to make a real effort to change my health. In January of 2010, though, I had a realization. I was offered the opportunity to participate in a “get fit challenge,” and nearly turned it down simply because I had never succeeded at any such challenge before. This time, however, I regarded it not just as an opportunity for me to change my health and body, but as an opportunity to be a healthier, stronger mother and role model for my growing children. I realized that as their mother, it was my responsibility to show them how to take care of their bodies. I needed to set a much better example; I would never want to see them quit on themselves, the way I was currently quitting on myself. That year, I set about making major changes to my habits, both with exercise and nutrition. I started carefully tracking everything I ate, and I took up running. I paid attention to how I was fueling my body, and I learned the foundations of nutrition. I substituted big, leafy salads topped with grilled chicken for (some of my) cheeseburgers. I opted for fruit instead of ice cream for dessert (sometimes). I scheduled my workouts carefully (the easy part), and attended them regularly (the hard part). I learned about strength training, and cardio, and why both were important. I discovered that I loved running; I ran in the rain, the cold, and the heat, and I ran my first 5K. Then I ran my first 8K, and half marathon. I ran off about sixty pounds that year, between making conscious decisions about my nutrition and exercise. I was surprised to find that I loved to exercise; I had never felt so comfortable and strong in my body, and I wanted to help others find that feeling, as well. I got my first group fitness certification the following spring, 2011, teaching bootcamp style classes for mothers, women who had been in the same place I had been. The following year, I studied for and obtained my personal training certification from the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers. I have also passed certification exams in TRX, yoga, and kettlebells. Most importantly, I am happier and more comfortable now in my body than I ever have been before, doing the activities that I love, and I strive to pass that joy and passion on to the people that I meet on my journey. I am so thrilled to have Kosama as an outlet to share my passion for health and fitness with others.
