In the news today.. So thats that then, the Conservative element of the coalition has gone completely against all their earlier greenwash by reversing subsidies on onshore renewables (many operated by British firms and employing British workers), while quietly theyre being investigated by the European Commission for (over?) subsidising EDF (a French company) to build new nuclear power stations! A decision that no doubt delights the enormously enriched fossil fuel-centric energy companies, the chancellor George Osborne (his father-in-law is reported as head of a lobbying organisation for big oil and gas companies) and a few voters with agreeable rural views who dont want to spot a turbine in the far distance; And at what cost? Lost jobs and expertise in renewables, that will put the UK further behind the rest of the world when the inevitability of alternative energy supply finally catches up with us. Further dependence on foreign companies for our energy needs, prices and certainty of supply. More and more atomic waste, plus atomic sites and fuel to keep safe. While we further risk not meeting internationally agreed treaties on the need to cut carbon emissions and risk the fines associated. So in conclusion, a buttock clenchingly disastrous move of shameful proportions!
