In the past year, I have read a lot of positive comments by non-Catholics about Pope Francis. They like his style, they like his humility, they like his openness and his willingness to reexamine many facets of Catholicism that have previously been seen as backwards and wrong. But make no mistake, there is no love lost between Catholics and Evangelical Christians and other conservative Protestant groups. They hate us, and they hate the Pope. Its intense, its personal, and its been kept hidden for the past year or so. Today, the Pope is hosting a personal meeting in the Vatican with himself and the leaders of Israel and Palestine, Shimon Peres and Mahmoud Abbas . I understand that Islamic prayers and a reading from the Koran will be heard for the first time in history at the Vatican; presumably there will also be readings from the Old Testament and the New from both the Pope and the leader of Israel, Shimon Peres. Well, some of the conservative Christian Protestants have lost their shit completely over this. Its the end-times, the Pope is the Red Shoed Whore of Rome, one woman commented on Fox News that the Pope should be sodomized by Muslims. To me, Christians are Christians. Regardless of denomination, the basic belief was that God is the Creator of Heaven and Earth, and that Jesus is His son, who died on the Cross for our sins, and there is no way to Heaven but through Jesus Christ. Simple stuff. As far as I am concerned, people can believe, not believe, have other beliefs, whatever. It doesnt affect how I feel about them, even if I am not a member of their religion (or lack of religion). Religion is personal. But no, we cant just all get along. Its not enough that we refuse to get along with those who believe in other Gods, or who believe in the same God differently, or those who dont believe in a God at all; no, we have to hate each other. The Pope is trying to do a good thing here. He is trying to encourage world peace between groups that have hated each other forever, and instead of thanks, Catholics are told that he should be sodomized by Muslims. Very discouraging, to say the least.
