In the shadows By Haroon Sader It may be bright outside, but how many of us walk in the way of the sun and feel it’s warmth on our skin, we most likely prefer walking in the shade to protect ourselves from the harshness of its rays. We live our lives in the shadows. We sneak out at night and deceive our parents, we lie, we cheat and we steal, we are masters of deception, and kings/queens of the world in our own minds. But it the life we’re living really a life, or is it a mere oasis of something that isn’t there. We try to fill the hole we have inside us, with sin. We become addicts to the life we once hated, the fears we once had become our realities. We live in a city of sin, we hide, duck and dive, coming out alive, barely but we make it through. Some of us aren’t so luckily, we get so caught up in the moment and in turn lose ourselves. The world isn’t a happy place but it’s still the world, we have contaminated it. Out intentions are no longer pure, and we should look at children for inspiration, they’re views on life are untainted, pure and true, they don’t know the meaning of hate, greed or lust. They are as we once were innocent and the future of humanity. We are the future yet we live in the past, we let it define us and people hold it against us till we die. The past is nothing more than the decisions we made, sometimes they weren’t good decisions, but at one moment, it felt right to us, and I believe that if something feels “right” to you, do it. You rather regret something you did than something you didn’t. I too have made my fair share of mistakes but I won’t let me yesterday pave the way for my tomorrow and neither should you. Deep inside us, we have something that want’s to scream out and that want to jump out and allow us to live, but in the society that we live in today, we are taught that it’s better not to say anything. The world isn’t getting any better, and like it or not, things have to change in order for us to survive. There may be water and food today, but what if there isn’t an tomorrow? Are we ready for that? We all leave things unsaid often until it’s too late, well I’m giving you an opportunity to prevent something you’ll regret. Have you lost someone close to you, and at one point there was nothing more you wanted, except one last moment to say that last, “I love you”? I’ve been there, but you have an opportunity to say it to someone right now, don’t make that mistake. I too was afraid, until, life showed me how short it really is. I lost a brother, a baby brother, he wasn’t given the opportunity to live, but I was, what justice would I be providing him with, If I didn’t follow my dreams, and lived to the best of my abilities, or at least tried too? There would be no justice. Go ahead now, and tell that someone you love them, thank them for what they’ve done. If someone broke your heart with honesty, thank them, I have, because very few people in this world will be honest with you. I won’t tell you to forgive anyone, cause it goes against our nature, but never let hurt rule your life for you. It’s too short. Kiss the pain goodbye and let go. Let’s stop living in the shadows and step into the light. I know it’s bright, but there’s so much more out there than in the small worlds we’ve created. Let’s stop lying to ourselves first, let’s look in the mirror and respect ourselves. Let’s make ourselves proud instead of trying to please or so called friends, hell, even family sometimes have their own hidden agenda, be careful in the dark. I can’t stress this enough, life is too damn short, we don’t need courage to do something we just need to wake up and realize that we may not see tomorrow, you may never the see the one you love tomorrow. “What’s the meaning of life” I wish I knew I don’t, it probably doesn’t have meaning, but I found something more important that meaning. We don’t need meanings in our lives, but we need reason, and the beauty of it all is that every day, each of us have a different reason for waking up, we each have something that makes us smile, that makes everything worth it. Find your reason, and let nothing come in the way. On a more positive note, there is still good in this world, I’ve seen it. I’ve seen fathers, hold there toddler son’s hands and walk down the road, I’ve seen children help and old lady cross the road, and I’ve seen kids play together. I’ve seen mothers give everything to make their children happy, and if that isn’t reason, I don’t know what it. Self-sacrifice, is the greatest virtue, and when you see it, you will cry, tears of joy. The war, the pain, the poverty, the crime and murder, all fails in comparison to our humanity. Don’t watch the world crumble, get up and do your bit, even if it’s with your family, If you love them, tell them. You don’t have to change the world, just change yours. Step out of the darkness and into the light and let the world show you how much it has to offer. But it’s a give and take relationship, if you want something, you have to put something in. Most importantly, the first step to happiness is truth, be true to you and nothing else matters, let the world know who you are. Change the world, but never let the world change you… Yours truly Haroon Sader
