In the video sent out in early June, we explained in detail our goals and purposes for staging the Jack Lummis-Young Marines Golf tournament. Here is the link to that video https://youtube/watch?v=_ycoyloWYI0. You’ll note that we have 5 General officers who have lent their names in support of this project. Since then, weve been made aware that, with the building of the new football stadium by Baylor University, our Young Marines will no longer participate in the parking concession at Baylor home games. We have done that for the past 7 years and it has been our biggest source of revenue. We will be losing $6,600 per year. The annual rental of our Young Marine headquarters is $3,600. Although a national program, Young Marine units receive no funding from National HQ. So, we are in danger of losing our building and having to shut down our unit. Over the past 10 years, we have put 484 kids through our program. That’s 484 lives we’ve positively impacted. Many of them have gone on to college. One was the National Young Marine of the Year. Another is currently a Marine officer on Okinawa. I’m sure you’ll agree that our youth represent the future of our country. I believe so strongly in this that I’ve personally contributed $1,000 for this effort. We firmly believe that this golf tournament will ultimately become a revenue source that will help offset that $6,600 loss. Realistically, it may take at least a year or two for it to become an established, recognized event here in Waco. But our mission this year and next will be to make the inaugural event a real success that will grow to help fund other Young Marine units as well as to keep our unit operating. Since the Young Marines was founded by the Brass City detachment in Waterbury, CT in 1958, the League has always been a strong supporter. Those detachments already supporting a YM unit realize what an important program it is. But, while there are 21 MCL detachments in Virginia, there are only 11 YM units in the state. I’m asking those who don’t have a unit to consider helping ours get over the first hurdle in this crisis. By making this a “collective”, nationwide appeal, the intent is to allow each individual contribution to be small, but still be effective. $5.00 per member. Most of us fritter away more than that each month. I am making a personal appeal to each of you to take a moment, go to our event website, and donate what you can. golfdigestplanner/26282-HOTYM/ Although the event is almost a year away, in the video we set September 1st as the deadline to know we’ll have enough money to continue planning. We must have $5,000 in contributions by that date or we simply can’t go forward with the event for 2015. First and foremost, we must know we will still have a functioning unit next June when the event is held. The trait that sets us apart as Marines is being Always Faithful in helping other Marines. Please come through for our Young Marines by making your contribution of $5.00 or more today.
