Increase in Knowledge Scripture "[S]o as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God." Colossians 1:10 (ESV) Observation Paul is praying for the Colossian Church and one of his prayers stands out here, that they should increase in the knowledge of God. I am a firm believer in the truth of this, that while we come to God in faith we must not throw our reason out the door. We are to continue to increase our knowledge and understanding of God so that when faith becomes difficult, say in the face of dessentors or a time when God seems far away, our knowledge of God can hold us firm to the path of following him. God is not outside of reason and completely beyond understanding, he made this universe and wants us to understand it and him as far as we are able, he wants us to use our brains too, as well as our hearts. Application Many times in my life I have found that my faith in the truth of God is diminished, and while I used to get bitter and frustrated because God was so far from me, ultimately it was I who was far from God. When I stop reading the Bible and praying I begin to drift away from God whether it is because of stresses, troubles or opposition. Whatever the reason for the gap between me and God I have found that a good knowledge of God based on reason and rational thought has been a lifeline to bring me back to him. I must not turn my brain off when it comes to belief in God, we were made with questions on our lips and God loves to answer them. Prayer Dear God please direct my paths to an ever greater understandng of you, make my mind to thirst for knowledge of you, reveal what you would of yourself and allow me to comprehend. Prepare me for those times of trouble that are sure to come.
