Indian Administrative Service (IAS) AMIT KUMAR (7th Rank) Civil Services Examination 2016 CSC : What were the basic mantras of your success? Amit Kumar : Hard work and guidance of my teachers and mentor. CSC : When did you start preparation for the IAS Examination? When should one ideally begin thinking about preparing for this exam? Amit Kumar : After completing my B.Tech I joined in a job in the private sector, it was then when I first thought of preparing for Civil Services. I think one should ideally start preparing one year before the prelims examination. CSC : How did you start preparation for the IAS Examination? Amit Kumar : The first important step was to choose my optional subjects which took around a month. After that I prepared GS and my first optional simultaneously and then my 2nd optional subject. CSC : What were your optionals? What where the basis of selecting these optionals? Amit Kumar : Prelims - Physics Mains - Physics & Maths. I took these subjects because I had technical background and I thought I could perform well with these subjects. CSC : How did you manage your time in both prelims and mains examinations? Amit Kumar : For mains I gave more time to my optional subjects. For prelims also my strategy was the same. CSC : Which is the most difficult part of this exam and why? What was your strategy to tackle this difficult part? Amit Kumar : I think interview is the trickiest part of the examination. After listening to all the strategies for interview I thought simplicity and honesty are best way to handle questions. CSC : How helpful are the coaching institutes? What is your overall opinion about coaching institute? Amit Kumar : Coaching institutes can only guide a candidate towards correct path. One has to work hard and apply his/her brain on the path shown by coaching. CSC : What should be the best strategy to tackle negative marking? Amit Kumar : One should not attempt question till he/she is able to eliminate at least two out of four options given. CSC : Which types of questions were asked for interview? Did you answered all? Amit Kumar : Some of the questions were: Why you left your previous job?; Why you want to become civil servant?; What is P.P.P.? Give one example.; Who won Oscar this time.; What do you think are causes of corruption?; How can you handle political pressure if you are exposed to it; Why you choose Maths & Physics as your optionals.;and some questions on climate change & poverty. CSC : Was there any specific area they emphasized upon? Amit Kumar : Yes, they were quite particular about how I responded to question: ‘why I want to join Civil Services?’ they also asked many cross questions on it. CSC : What is your advice to the freshers who are going to appear for this exam? Amit Kumar : First choose right optional that you are comfortable with and then, with the help of right guidance prepare them thoroughly. Answer writing practice is important. CSC : What is your advice to the candidates who have failed in this exam? Amit Kumar : This exam unlike other checks temperament of candidates. It might happen that a candidate even after working hard is not able to be selected in some attempts. But one has to keep himself focused and finally success will definitely come. CSC : Since when have you begun reading Civil Services Chronicle magazine? What are your suggestions to make it more useful for Civil Services Examination? Amit Kumar : CSC is a good magazine which is really helping to reduce the efforts of candidates in their preparation.
