Indoor Cycling Association I will say it publicly here and now. The indoor cycling world has jumped the shark with this batch of new videos with the hip-hop classes on the bike with the instructor twerking the bikes (hes not on a bike mind you). But its not just the latest ones, its been getting worse the past 5 years or so, with the onslaught of studios practicing contraindicated moves as a matter of practice. When (not IF) someone gets really injured, most likely throwing out their backs or knees, because their feet are locked in a sagittal plane moving at 60, 70, 80, or even 90 or more times a minute while their spines and hips are being thrown about left and right and up and down (causing a sheer action at the joints), ICA will be here to act as an expert witness. The scientific proof (i.e. anatomy, exercise science, biomechanics, etc) is there to show how dangerous these techniques are. Spread the word. I dont want anyone to get injured, that is why ICA is standing on this stage holding up the Keep it Real banner so high, and that is why Ive personally been preaching this message for the past decade. The LAST thing I want is to say I Told You So! but, with the latest generation of classes, I know its just a matter of time before someone sues someone (like this instructor in these videos, or the clubs where this is allowed to go on). Theyre going to need proof....and weve got it. Are you a facility where this is happening? Or, GX directors, do you not know whats going on in your classes? Have you checked how protected you are? Because even if you have members sign a waiver, if instructors or facilities are found to be negligent by doing things that go against the grain of common sense and against proper science of movement on a bike, techniques that are contraindicated in EVERY REPUTABLE certifying agency out there, I have a feeling your waiver will NOT hold up in court. Instructors, please share this with your managers... There are injuries going on all the time, but they usually get swept under the rug, or worse, the student thinks Oh I guess Spinning is not for me and incorrectly goes away with the idea that its Spinning, and not the irresponsible instructor or facility. This is not only NOT Spinning®, its not responsible instruction on any kind of bike, anywhere in the world.
