The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta is pleased to announce the call for applications for Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders on Religious Pluralism. Applications are due in the U.S. Embassy by COB Wednesday, October 17, 20 12. Program Description Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders are intensive academic programs whose purpose is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The Study of the U.S. Institute on Religious Pluralism in the U.S. will explore U.S. history, society, and institutions within the context of religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue. Topics will include, but are not limited to, early religious traditions in the U.S.; the separation of church and state; immigration and the introduction of new religions in the U.S.; protection and representation of minority groups and religions; and interfaith dialogue and cooperation in a diverse and rapidly changing world. Participants will meet with U.S. community leaders of different faiths that advocate for collaboration and tolerance among religious groups. Participants will also examine the leadership role that religious officials play in their own societies and develop ideas for how they can work with leaders, of similar or different faiths, to bring about positive social change. During their four-day study tour, participants will travel to Florida where they will have the opportunity to visit historic and cultural sites and discuss topics related to immigration and the Native-American experience. The Institute will take place from January 13 - February 17, 2013, at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Specific Required Qualifications The participants are expected to be highly motivated and exemplary undergraduate students from colleges, universities, and other institutions of higher education. While all candidates should have a strong interest in religious pluralism, their fields of study might vary, and can include disciplines such as Anthropology, Government, History, International Affairs, Law, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, etc. Other Required Qualifications: - have a strong interest in religious proven by activities; - be between 18 and 25 years of age; - have strong English language skills; - have completed at least one semester of university and have at least one semester remaining when they return from the program midyear in 2013; - be committed to returning to their home universities following completion of their Institute program; - demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in their university and community activities; - indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States; - have a sustained high level of academic achievement, as indicated by grades, awards, and lecturer recommendations; - have demonstrated commitment to community and extracurricular university activities; - have had little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of their home country; - be mature, responsible, independent, confident, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful and inquisitive; - be willing and able to fully participate in an intensive academic program, community service, and educational travel program; and, - be comfortable with campus life, prepared to share living accommodations, and able to make adjustments to cultural and social practices different from those of their home country. Application Instructions: - Candidates MUST submit a complete application using the attached form and 2 (two) letters of recommendation. Incomplete applications will not be considered. - Sending a CV alone is NOT adequate. - Please do not attach any certificates or any supporting documents. - Application package file MUST NOT exceed 1 Megabytes (MB) and MUST be in Microsoft Word format. Program Requirements and Restrictions: Participants are expected to participate fully in the academic program. They should attend all lectures and organized activities, and complete assigned readings. There will be little time for personal pursuits unrelated to the program. Candidates will NOT be allowed to arrive in the U.S. prior to the start date of the Institute or remain in the U.S. after its end date. Participants will NOT be allowed to leave the Institute to visit relatives or friends while in the U.S. If a relative or friend wishes to visit them, it will be addressed on a case by case basis, in consultation with U.S. State Department and the program director. Violations of program rules, host institution rules, or local, state or federal laws can be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program.
