Information from the Aberfan Education Charity The Trustees of the Charity recently awarded distributions totalling over £34,000 to local schools and educational establishments serving the children of Aberfan and Merthyr Vale, after a competition in which all schools were invited to participate. Ysgol Rhyd y Grug is to receive £15,000 to create an outside environmental centre to develop key areas of learning through environmental activities, including literacy, numeracy, art and the humanities. There will also be opportunities for wider partnership working and community involvement. Greenfield School was awarded £10,000 towards the refurbishment of its hydro pool, this sum triggering match funding from another donor. Trinity Child and Family Centre was awarded some £6,700 for a Growing Garden plus a ‘Mud pie’ kitchen. Finally, Afon Taf High School was awarded £3,000 to enable the purchase of a laser cutter for the Design & Technology department. The Charity is pleased in all of these various ways to be able to help and enhance the educational experience of children in schools and educational establishments serving the people of Aberfan and Merthyr Vale.
