Informational meeting about the Troost Overlay that is being proposed. NHS has submitted a letter of support for the initiative. Over the last few weeks, many of you may have received a letter from the city or seen a sign posted about a public hearing for a zoning overlay district on Troost. To help keep our neighbors informed about this technical but important initiative, a “teach-in” will be held at 6 pm, November 11, at Bancroft School (43rd & Tracy). City communication has a way of creating confusion and sounding a bit ominous. So as a resident of a Troost neighborhood it’s important that you know what the overlay is and is not. It’s not a condemnation action or an attempt to impact any current Troost business or activity. It’s not a city plan for a development coming down the line. Some neighbors on Tracy, Forest, Harrison, and Campbell have received letters from the city and wondered if the overlay affects their home. It doesn’t. The overlay doesn’t change anything on properties that aren’t on Troost. So, why support the overlay? The biggest reason is that Troost is vital to all of our neighborhoods. The goal of the overlay is to foster an environment where a thriving community with residential, appropriate retail, sustainable transit, and local shops, restaurants, and workplaces is possible. We know that Troost needs some help. We also know that as neighbors who live, work, play, and worship along Troost, we understand the challenges and opportunities in a way that no one else can. The overlay was initiated and led by neighbors in an unprecedented collaboration between the Longfellow, Beacon Hill, Hyde Park, Center City, Squier Park, and Manheim Park neighborhoods. That’s important. It’s also the product of over 5 years of public meetings – many of which you may have participated in. Through those meetings and the one coming up on November 11, the overlay has been crafted and refined with suggestions and input from our neighbors. If you have any questions about the overlay, please be sure to attend this meeting.
