Institute looking for Assistant Curator Albany Institute of History & Art Assistant Curator Full time 3 to 5 years minimum experience Master’s Degree required Founded in 1791, the Albany Institute of History & Art, a museum and research library, is dedicated to documenting, interpreting, and preserving the arts, history, and culture of the Upper Hudson Valley through exhibitions, public programs, and publications. The Institute’s collections include more than 35,000 works of fine and decorative arts, historical objects, and close to 1 million documents in its research library. Job duties: The assistant curator reports directly to the chief curator and works closely with curatorial staff and staff from other departments within the museum on specific projects. Primary duties include: Exhibition research and curation. The Institute’s active exhibition program requires the assistant curator to participate in all stages of exhibition planning, research, and development. He/she will curate exhibitions and will work closely with the chief curator and/or guest curators on other projects. The assistant curator will also work with the exhibition designer on installations, which occasionally requires hands-on work with fabrication and maintenance. Collections processing and management. The assistant curator will work with the chief curator and a part-time curatorial assistant to accession, catalogue, house, and manage the Institute’s collection of art and historical objects. The assistant curator must be organized, pay attention to detail, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs. He/She will work with donors to document new acquisitions and prepare requisite paperwork, and will also assist with loans of objects. To fulfill these duties the assistant curator must occasionally travel. Digital collections. The Albany Institute continually adds to its digital collections database, which is accessible from its website. The assistant curator will work closely with the digital imaging specialist and chief curator to add new content. General knowledge of content management systems and collections databases will be helpful. Public programs. The assistant curator will conduct special gallery tours and presentations and may occasionally assist education department staff on other programming. Grant writing. As part of the overall fundraising initiatives, the Albany Institute prepares several grants each year. The assistant curator will participate in writing and gathering information for grants pertaining to exhibitions, collections documentation, and conservation. Collections research. The assistant curator is encouraged to conduct research on collections and related topics and disseminate new information through publications, presentations, and other means. Other duties as needed. Job requirements: The successful candidate will have an M.A. in American art, American history, museum studies, material culture, public history, or related field, and will have a minimum of three to five years experience in a museum environment where duties included exhibition planning and development and collections management. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable of material objects and should possess an understanding of their role and use within social and cultural contexts. The candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and possess a degree of comfort working with various software packages, databases, and content management systems. He/she will also be organized and be able to manage multiple projects.
