Interesting video of some guys helping out a homeless man, Ive seen shared by a lot of people now. But heres my point, its not actually changed anything. Today the man has a few coins so can get a cup of coffee and a snack, tomorrow hell be back on the street and in exactly the same spot most likely. Most importantly it shows how so many people think of charity: its something that happens to the people theyre trying to help. People go and give some things out, hand out food, school supplies, money, without ever asking what the person would like or need in the first place. Hes not involved in the process. They dont even know his name. Sure its with good intentions and sure its a nice gesture sure. But in development work you have to think long-term and about solving the cause of the problem, not treating the symptom a little. Otherwise its a nice video, but tomorrow everything is exactly back the way it was and no lasting impact has been made. Im writing an article about why we need to be smart about charity (pending a survey with the nanays we work with at the Fairplay For All Foundation) so would be interested to hear your opinion? sfglobe/?id=2098&src=share_fb_new_2098
