Interesting week in the Portolano household. You may remember - TopicsExpress

Interesting week in the Portolano household. You may remember only a few months back we had a somewhat unwecome adventure when a kid jumped into our back yard and was, in short order, gang tackled by a large posse of boys in blue uniforms. Quiet (in a relative sense) since then. However, I think our particular house must be very close to the epicenter of the strange and unusual events portal from another dimension. Earlier this week Im awakened from a dead sleep by Lena and Dasha knocking on my bedroom door (Lana was out of town doing work-related research in Worcester, MA)) in the middle of the night, maybe 2:30 am, to tell me someone is in the house!!!! Yes, this is the kind of event I generally categorize as a genuine 5-alarm moment. I jumped out of bed, put on my robe and went out expecting God only knows what (wheres the Howitzer when you need one). Thank you God! Turns out it was just a very sweet, but very confused little old lady trying to find her way home. She simply walked into our house (kids - remember to lock the door at night before going to bed) and gone up the stairs to the bedrooms thinking it was her house. Yes; she was quite intent on getting into her (Dashas) bedroom (same place as her bedroom at home) so she could go to sleep. No amount of persuasion could convince her this was the wrong place. It didnt help that she didnt speak any English and my Spanish - well, lets just say leaves much to be desired. Oh well; I let her go to bed and then called 911. Yep! Fits the description of a Silver alert. They know where she belonged and told me who to contact. Family showed up shortly but since grandmother had taken her sleeping meds. for the night, she was completely unawakeable (is that a real word?). At that point it seemed like the best course of action was to just let her sleep and work it all out in the morning. I slept (sorta) on the couch in the living room to be sure she did not wander off again. The next morning she quietly came down to the kitchen and started preparing breakfast, although she was obviously puzzled as to why everything had been moved around. Her daughter arrived to explain everything to her, and bring mama home. Alls well that ends well. Glad we were able to provide a safe haven for a neighbor. Our adventure for the week. Got to remember to keep this sweet, sweet soul in our prayers. On a lighter note, this Saturday Lana and I had two parties to attend. The 1st was a baby shower for a dear Ukrainian friend, Luda. Seemed like we were one of only a few couples who did not speak Ukrainian or Russian! Fortunately, the other guests were, unlike us provincial American born Americans, not limited to one language, and kind enough to share the conversations in English. :) Lovely time was had by all! Later that day we went to my Brazilian friend Giselles Cowboy themed birthday party. Lana and Dasha had the boots and accessories. I went as a lame old guy in jeans. :( Deja Vu! Pretty much everyone at this party (except us) spoke Portuguese. Brazilians are, without a doubt, some of the most party loving folks youd ever want to meet! Much fun was had!!! On a even lighter note, today (Sunday) we went to Church as usual, but something a little out-of-the-ordinary happened that made the entire church laugh during Mass (not your typical Catholic Sunday service demeanor). Everyones been to events where youre asked to turn off your cell phone before things start (like in a movie theater). Ever been in a situation where youre the one who forgot to silence the ring and you get a call at a most awkward moment? I can tell you from painful personal experience its embarrassing to be sitting in Church and have your phone wake everyone up, er, I mean disturb the worship service! Could anything be worse? YES! During his homily our priests cell phone started ringing - and ringing and ringing LOUDLY! Hilarious beyond words! He fished around under his robes and took it out of his pocket to turn it off, and in his most apologetic voice said No one ever calls me. All I can say is, it made my day! Thanks Lord for the extra smile this Sunday! Im telling you, this retirement thing is just too exciting for words. I need a vacation! :)
