Is there only one truth in this world? The world opinion about truth Is there anything absolute about truth? There is a contemporary way of thinking, in which the truth is seen as relative, conditional, and cultural, so that one person’s truth may be different from another person’s. The Bible opinion about truth But Bible sees the truth in a different way. According to the Bible the Truth as it exists in God, who is the source and foundation of all truth, is only one. Scripture considers truth as universal applicable to all the mankind. Your truth should be same as mine. In the Bible the three words “wisdom”, “truth”, and “word” are almost synonymously used to denote the divine knowledge of God. Bible reiterates God as the source of all wisdom. We all know that famous statement in the scripture, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Prov. 9:10). One this is sure, if there is only one truth on any subject, and then it should be only known to somebody who knows all the truth. By definition, then that person can be only God, who is omniscient. God as the creator of all things is the foundation of all truth. This absolute universality of truth is asserted by Jesus, when he made the statement “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice” (John 18:37). That means there is only one truth, as there is only one Christ. Interestingly at this moment Pilate asked “What is truth?” Our duty is to teach this universal truth to all mankind. Wisdom personified Wisdom of God is sometimes personified in scripture. “Does not wisdom cry out…She takes her stand on the top of the high…She cries out by the gates…To you, O men…And you fools, be of an understanding heart. Listen, for I will speak of excellent things…For my mouth will speak truth” (Prov. 8:1-7). God’s wisdom is being communicated to everyone. God created all human life, and Christ died to redeem each one of us. Those who want to listen can hear and accept it. In this world so many people have already lived, and still live, in ignorance, in folly, and in darkness. Many still live with no hope at all or with false hopes. What makes this sorry state of affairs even sadder is that wisdom and truth are so wonderful, at our reach, filled with hope and promise for a better life now itself and with the surety of an eternal life in the future. This is all made possible because of the sacrifice of Jesus. All the wealth in the world means nothing compared to the knowledge of God (Eccl. 2:11–13). Wisdom and creation Listen how this wisdom is related to creation, “The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earth…Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; and I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him” (Prov. 8:22-30). Thus wisdom is very intimately mysteriously related to the creator God. This emphasizes the primary credential of wisdom. If God Himself used wisdom to create, if wisdom is the oldest tool, older than the universe itself and so fundamental to its existence, then how much we should listen to this wisdom. There is a strong emphasis on the divine origin of wisdom. The first word is the LORD, Yahweh, who is said to have begotten (second word) wisdom. The Hebrew word “qanah”, translated as “possessed”, has the connotation of “begetting” rather than “creating” (Deut. 32:6, Gen. 4:1). The next word is the technical word that is associated with the Genesis creation, “reshit” (beginning), which is found in the first verse of Genesis. In Proverbs this word is related to God himself, which means His nature. Thus wisdom is a part of the very nature of God. Therefore wisdom is present even before the creation of this world. The existence of wisdom, at that time when only God was present, traces the antiquity of wisdom “from everlasting”. All these show that wisdoms cannot originate from within ourselves, instead it is revealed to us and we are taught by God. As Jesus said, He is the true light which gives light to every man (John 1:9). The Word became flesh Another term used synonymous with “wisdom” is “word”. Bible talks about this Word as existing in the beginning, with God and same as God. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). We know that this Word is Jesus Christ, who “came unto His own (people)” (John 1:11), thus taking human form. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Again it is written, “all things were made by Him” (John 1:3). The Christ, the Word, the only begotten of God, was one with the eternal Father, one in nature, in character, and in purpose, the only being that could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God. And this Son of God declares concerning Himself, ‘The Lord possessed me in the beginning of His way, before His works of old. I was set up from everlasting… When He appointed the foundations of the earth: then I was by Him, as one brought up with Him: and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him’ (Prov. 8:22-30). Our response to God’s truth The intellectual knowledge of wisdom’s pre-existence is not enough. This truth comes down to our personal level. How do we respond to this truth that we have been given in Jesus? Bible says “Blessed are those who keep my ways” (Prov. 8:32) and “Blessed are the undefiled…who walk in the law of the LORD! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies” (Ps. 119:1-2). What is our attitude to God’s truth? “Blessed is the man who listens to me” (Prov. 8:34). It is a continuous effort. It is not just discovering the right way, but we have to “keep it”. It is not enough to hear the word of God; but we have to watch daily and follow what we know. As Jesus put it: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it” (Luke 11:28). Two lifestyles We have to make a choice now between two lifestyles: wisdom or folly. Bible brings out the contrast between these two ways of life (Prov. 9:1–6, 13–18). Wisdom calls us to forsake foolishness and live, while folly leads us to death. Conclusion Absolute truth exists, as known to God. He has revealed His wisdom through His prophets, and finally through His Son, the Word, Jesus Christ. It is our choice, whether to listen to God’s wisdom or go along the path of folly. Our ultimate destiny depends on our selection, and whether we live according to His word. May God bless us!
