Islam and Uyghurs in China By Mike Joseph – Burma Times - There has been increasing conflict among the Islamic minority in China and the Chinese government. This conflict is most pronounced in the Xinxiang province of China, where the Muslim Uyghur population is the single largest ethnic minority. The Uyghur population has been asserting its Islamic cultural identity, and views China’s presence in the region as imperialistic. On the other hand, China views the assertion of Islamic identities in Xinxiang as a threat to its national security. China’s concern are also perpetuated by the geographical location of Xinxiang province, and its sharing of borders with five Muslim countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, and Turkmenistan – that in the past have led active or tacit support to Islamic fundamental militancy. burmatimes.net/islam-and-uyghurs-in-china/
