It is despicable that the police provoked students who were demonstrating peacefully against fee and pursued them right into the university precincts, even invading, beating up and arresting those who were busy reading in the library. The freedoms of expression and speech and the rights to demonstrate and picket peacefully are fundamental features of our democratic culture, a culture we struggled hard to finally entrench into the new Constitution, and must therefore be protected. Although I am mature student at UoN and therefore politically inactive in students affairs, I today join forces with the rest of the students in demanding revocation of the new fees structure and condemning the police brutality. I want to urge Babu and the rest of the student leadership to stay focused and not succumb to state terror. Students body is a key organ in the University community and must be consulted for any major policy shift like increase of fees. I will offer free consultancy, if necessary, to the students union, on organizing for active non violence to compel the university to withdraw the new fees policy and to compel the Government to respect fundamental freedoms. I want to call to action my peers in students activism of the 1990s and former students leaders Fwamba Nc Fwamba, Moses Oburu, Hassan Omar and Apc Awuor Ponge, Willis Memo, Wafula Buke, Ndolo Asasa Owuon KwaOsango, Cyprian Nyamwamu, Wambua Katuku, Boaz Waruku. These lads and lasses need out encouragement, advice and other forms of support to make meaningful contribution to their lot and to the society. We have walked this path they are walking today.
