It is my daily practice to listen to choral music each morning as I travel to the office. It is a form of prayer for me, and through it I am able to bring all manner of prayer concerns to the forefront. As I listened today, I heard something I hadnt noticed before. I was able to discern a pattern in the music, an ebb and flow of tension and resolution, tension and resolution. Passing tones, suspensions, inverted chords and dynamics all work to create what I see as a metaphor for life - conflict and restlessness (external and internal) working toward resolution and reconciliation. The key (pun intended) is in the discernment. And that is a spiritual discipline which requires focus and a willingness to sit in the beauty of restlessness, even for a short time. Son Andrew is becoming aware of this as well, although he likely wouldnt articulate it in quite the same way. He came home from school yesterday thrilled with the afternoon installment of his orchestra concert: Mom, youll LOVE Troika! It starts out kinda loud, then gets real soft, then gets loud again. It was SO COOL! Living on that continuum of expression, I rather believe that Andrew is beginning to learn something about how the human heart is stirred by beauty-in-process, unresolved but moving toward resolution. Maybe another way to describe it is with one of those churchy words - sanctification. Okay. Enough armchair philosophy for one day! Thanks for indulging me.
