It is prohibited in Islam to imitate the non-Muslims in their culture and customs. However, a lot of us are confused about what makes something an imitation. Using what is beneficial and it is not part of the non-Muslims’ culture or religion is permissible. Working on computers, wearing watches or using cars is of this sort. There are things that our religion totally prohibits such as wearing the cross or celebrating their holidays. This is because it is the essence of their religion and customs. Therefore, whatever is part of their religion or customs which a person would be identified as a non-Muslim if seen doing it, this is imitation. Wearing a Kimono for example is prohibited because whenever one sees this, he knows that it is of a non-Muslim. However, not everything is done in this fashion! For example, Muslims wearing trousers and suites are not classified as imitating the non-Muslims though originally it was theirs. However, the first to wear it and introduce it to the Muslims were sinful and were imitators. A wedding cake and a white wedding dress fall under that category. Most Muslims use this and it is not part of imitating the non-Muslims. Imam Malik was asked about wearing “Baranis”, he said it is halal. They told him it is the uniform of the Christians. He said: Muslims used to wear it here.
