It must be stressed that most convicts of color have empirically been guilty of violent crimes, and the truth about marijuana criminalization is that nobody can be convicted for merely possessing it. Theyre convicted because they were either (1) possessing and distributing it for commercial purposes at about 100 pounds as federal law dictates, or (2) theyre directly or indirectly involved in a criminal organization in some fashion that distributes marijuana at, again, about 100 pounds. Most young people of color find themselves as, technically speaking, independent contractors who merely sell the drug in a certain neighborhood like a traveling salesman of yesteryear. One can speculate whether or not the real enemies are the kingpins of these organizations, and how theyre deliberately tearing historically vulnerable communities apart from coast to coast. But, is the way governments are reacting miscalculated? Are members of these communities being targeted before theyre convicted have the willingness to talk to the authorities about who sold them the substance, or how they obtained it? Apparently, the communities of which I speak are clearly not and its known that these types of communities -- low income, highly dense, and urban neighborhoods, have a culture equivalent to those living in suburban, conservative and historically white neighborhoods on their attitudes towards authority.
