It was about this time last year that we got the tragic news of my dad’s condition – he had Motor Neurone Disease. When I first heard he had motor neurone’s disease I recall asking to my brother Tony what exactly is it? My family had already at this stage become aware of his speech problems and how bad his neck looked. It was through another local parishioner who also had been diagnosed with the same condition that I was slightly aware of what MND was. As time passed he couldn’t eat or swallow and he weighed very little. His communication skills were reduced to writing on a white board in which he used up until the hour of his death. Throughout the last year we had been hoping trial medication would work but sadly it failed and it was devastating for him and anyone with the disease to hear. In his memory and for others… I want to help raise awareness of this incurable disease and also help raise funds for the research team to try and find a cure for MND. What is Motor Neurone Disease? Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. However, not all symptoms necessarily happen to everyone and it is unlikely they will all develop at the same time, or in any specific order. What we have done so far: A team of us abseiled down the Obel Tower (287 ft – highest building to abseil in NI) We have raised £600 so far for this challenge We also have our charity night in Bellini’s Newry on July 20th with various artists including stand up comedian Michael Redmond AKA Father Stone. The night will also include a raffle and auction. We then have a sponsored walk on September 21st at Slieve Donard at £20 a head we hope to raise extra money on top of the challenge. We are hoping to have another night in September with other ‘Father Ted’ characters such as Father Damo and Eoin McLove. We are also hoping to have one more outdoors challenge at the end of October. Please help us raise funds for MND via this link or contact me on 07794433571.Youcan donate to this link below… justgiving/MND-AEI A massive thanks to everyone who took part in the abseil and to all those who sponsored us.
