It was great to see Jill Stark’s feature on the terrible legacy of ‘toxic stress’ caused by domestic abuse and neglect (Sunday The Age - theage.au, 7/7, bit.ly/15vZjiG). The evidence is clear – violence and neglect cause changes in a child’s brain which can significantly impair and derail their trajectory in life. The focus on the important role schools play for all children resonates strongly with our experience in the Berry Street school. A week at one of our 3 campuses, which cater to some of Victoria’s most traumatised and disengaged students, includes rhythmic, somatosensory and mindfulness informed activities, therapeutic martial arts, creative work and drama. We know these activities are an essential part of recovery and success If we want a healthy society, we need a well-being curriculum taught alongside other life skills. We also need to name ‘domestic abuse’ for what it is – most commonly, men misusing their power over women and children. There is no place for violence – on the streets, in the workplace or in families. Sandie de Wolf AM CEO Berry Street
