Its been two years since I published Super Tool Lula--and I am even more passionate about her mission. Here were some of the qualities I wrote about when I first introduced the book back in Oct. of 2011 in terms of providing the kind of character that could go beyond the stereotypes and teach children that not all girls are the same: -Shes a girl, not a woman. As such, she has a girls body. She is not super skinny or curvy, doesnt have a huge chest, and wears pants. She is intended to introduce a super hero to girls who have few to choose from. -Shes not a derivative of a male super hero like Batgirl or Supergirl; instead, she is modeled after a real girl who has loved tools and helping her dad with building projects since the age of three. -While she is a bully-fighting super hero, she doesnt actually fight so there is no emphasis on physical force or violence. Instead, she transforms bullies with the help of her magic tools and a bit of psychology. -She introduces a set of skills to help girls build confidence in areas of science and math. Much research has been done as to why girls dont pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)--I believe if they see it, theyll believe it. As Lula, she knows the difference between a Philips-head and flathead screwdriver, loves science, and plays drums. She has her own tool belt and tools. -Though she is a new kind of role model for girls, she can also appeal to boys because she offers something other than the stereotypical female character. princessfreezone/pfz-blog/2011/10/28/super-tool-lula-the-bully-fighting-super-hero-the-book-is-he.html
