Its great to see that Louise Piper endorsed Dan Coulter for School Trustee. This is an important endorsement for Dan, as Louise was well-respected in her role on the Board. Kind of funny that a certain tone was taken about Louises political affiliation, though. The thing is, Louise has maybe supported the NDP for a long time, but I dont believe that was ever public knowledge until now, at least not for publication in the media. I havent seen it, anyhow. Much was made of Louises political leanings in this article, so Im kind of hoping its because she said something about it herself and the article wasnt just a means of pointing the partisanship finger at Dan (seeing as Ben Besler has made partisanship so very fashionable during the course of this byelection). I sure hope so! I mean, its kind of great to think that Chilliwack has grown to the sort of stature where people are proud to say theyre NDP, publicly. I remember a different Chilliwack and not so long ago. I remember canvassing for the NDP in high school and having an older gentleman pick up gravel from his driveway and throw it at me, yelling Communist! I remember believing the NDP would never elect a representative here. Boy. Things sure have changed and now Gwen OMahony has represented Chilliwack-Hope as part of the NDP Caucus. She now sits on the Board of UFV, an institution my father was instrumental is bringing to fruition in this community. That was Eric Woodroff and in case you didnt know, he was NDP, too. Thats right. Im an orange diaper Dipper. So heres to change and heres to Louise Piper coming out as a Dipper and heres to Chilliwack giving up on civic McCarthyism. Good stuff, all around.
