Its really starting to sink in how much of a shame the Gaza situation is. Plenty of moderate, peaceful Palestinians are dying because they turned to a militant group who seemed like the stronger force that was needed to enact change but are failing at both their job and their PR, who see resisting occupation as their only choice, which they do by firing rockets. But at the same time, Israelis are also trying to be understood that they dont hold ill will towards them, they respond militarily because they too see it as their only option. What we need to see and understand are two things; firstly, both sides have legitimate grievances and worries, however stupid or dishonest or stubborn their political or military leaders may seem. Secondly, there simply is no way to bring the situation to a halt without one side either eliminating each other or entering into serious diplomatic talks. The first option is unthinkable and the second is essential. Even the leader of Hamas said this morning that all he wants is for the blockades to be lifted and for Palestinians to be treated with due fairness. This is not an unreasonable request. Israel has to step up and be the big man here by conceding these things rather than perpetuating the cycle of mutual distrust and punishment were seeing clearly now. Stop shooting. Sit down, come to a fair agreement that both parties can concede to. Its a lack of mutual respect and a surplus of stubbornness that is only going to make this situation worse, not better.
