Its remembrance day here in Canada. A lot has changed since I served in the Canadian Forces as an Infantry Soldier. Back in the mid 90s my experience was a lot of people had little respect for service members. Which I generally didnt care. But it was the vocal ones that got me. The ones that yelled baby killers at us while we waited to get on a bus to go on a field exercise, and our Warrant Officer had to chill us out. The ones that threw a full coffee cup at the back of our truck as we drove by. The ones that yelled Bosnia is that way losers! as they drove by us while we were on a company run. I remember them very clearly. Today, I see an outpouring of support for the services, likely due to a shift in our federal government and in light of recent and ongoing highly media covered over seas events. Im still concerned though. To me, service people are military, police, firefighters, paramedics, municipal enforcement officers and Security officers. These people still face heavy abuses at the hands of our local citizenship. Belittlement, threats, assaults. All unprovoked and simply because they chose to stand up and serve their country and community. Its shameful and disgusting behavior. On this Remembrance Day take a moment to look around at all people of service and keep them in your thoughts. Have a great day.
