It’s a sad thing to see pop legends in such a state of desperation – or maybe they’re completely out of ideas and decided to phone it in. Whatever’s the case, the new albums by Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, and Barry Manilow are depressing for those of us who still relish the work they did decades ago, when they were young, daring and, in some respects, ground-breaking. It’s unfair to expect that same kind of artistic fervor and adventure from these artists who are now in their 70s and long past the point where they have anything to prove. But old fans and newcomers deserve something that isn’t so disingenuous and lazily produced, especially from Barbra and the Queen of Soul.
