Ive been lucky enough to have lived in eight different states from New Hampshire to Washington and New Mexico to New Orleans. It rocks. Opens your eyes to cultural uniqueness. My XC first experience was moving from Appalachia to New Mexico. I come from Celtic story-telling culture ... since the storytelling Scots and Irish leaped directly from the Scottish Highlands to the Appalachian Highlands. For instance, listen to the potent similarities between Celtic and Bluegrass musical styles. When I moved to New Mexico, I taught writing and media law at New Mexico State University. In my classes, I always had Navajo students. Since it was a writing class, I worked one-on-one with the students. The Navajo students would not look me in the eye and said very little. I though wtf ? Is it my dead possum breath? Im trying to make myself be approachable. I learned this was respect and courtesy ... avoiding intrusiveness. Theres so freaking much neat stuff out there in the U.S.!
