Ive been to Daytona International Speedway as a spectator, a volunteer, and a vendor. This weekend, I had the most fun of all as a driver, and an official! A rough start on Saturday morning getting to the tower, then figuring out when to checker the various groups to keep us on schedule while trying to maximize the run time for each group resulted in a 20 min delay before the before the 3rd session was on track. But we worked through it all, and the rest of the weekend was great from the tower. Jim and Jon came up to relieve me so I could run in the Thunder race. Jessicas dad, Walter, and Miguel had managed to stop a fuel leak that started in the morning when my tank was filled. I jumped in the car, joined the back of the PTD grid, and had an amazing race from 10th to 2nd. Incredible 5 lap battle with Brian (who I honestly thought was the leader of the race... Ryan checked out on the field on the first lap) to the checkered flag, at which point the car sputtered with no fuel. I thought Id run out, so got towed into the garage, and made my way back up to the tower to finish the day. Filled the car up on Sunday morning, turned the car and had fuel spilling out from underneath the car. Brandon quickly identified that the fuel pump hose had come loose in the tank. Popped it back on, and took my wife out for a ride on the track as a warm up for the race. Took the green flag, and car sputtered on the first lap right before pit lane. I ducked in, and spotted Matt Wells and Rob Paszkiewicz who pushed me into my garage. Danny and Will Baumeister grabbed tools and opened up the tank cover, zip tied the hose back in place and sent me back out into the race which was under caution. I only lost 2 laps and still managed to finish 9th out of 11. What a weekend!!! I experienced both the highs and lows of Daytona, and I wouldnt trade any part of it (except hitting the cone at the exit of the bus stop in the race which put a nice little dent in my bumper and knocked off my transponder, and keeping everyone on schedule early on). Thanks to Jon, Jim, and Julie for making Daytona happen this year, and everyone who contributed to making it a success! Pics and video to come later!
