Ive been trying to understand the latest iteration of New Math for awhile now, and I think I may have FINALLY figured out whats going on here. Teachers - Please correct me if Im wrong. From this image, it looks like Common Core is trying to teach kids multiple methods of solving a simple math problem. Im guessing the thinking behind this has to do with different kids learning in different ways. Im all in favor of that to a point. I understand that what makes sense to one person doesnt always make sense to another and that giving people different types of examples can be very helpful in getting people to understand complex ideas. But arent we creating more confusion by giving children too many options? I mean, were teaching all kinds of options to kids who cant decide between pizza and McDonalds. If you give them a choice between Double Chocolate Fudge or Rocky Road or Moose Tracks or Mackinaw Island Fudge ice cream, youll be there for an hour waiting for them to make up their minds! There really IS such a thing as giving children too many choices. Maybe a better way to teach children is to accept that people learn in different ways and divide them into teaching groups based on how they learn (visual, auditory, tactile, and those who just get it, even though we dont know how or why). That would cut down on all the confusion caused by trying to teach multiple methods to all the children at once, causing greater confusion and making it even harder for our children to learn basic skills. Its just a suggestion, obviously, but I think it has greater potential for success than the current foolishness. i2.wp/truthinamericaneducation/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Common-Core_1_thumb.jpg?resize=593%252C392
