Ive been wondering if the uptick in lethal-force encounters isnt the result of our last two wars. A lot of guys wearing a badge now wore a uniform in Afghanistan and Iraq, in urban wars where anyone might be their enemy, wasnt wearing a uniform and might have been wearing an IED. The unofficial MO there was to assume the worst and to take down a potential threat rather than risk losing a brother in uniform. Along with a lot of other baggage, I think that attitude came home on the duffel bag. All I know is cops are beating and/or killing a lot of folks they dont need to, and that isnt raising 1/4 of the alarm it should. There was footage on YouTube a couple of months ago of police chasing a man suspected of shoplifting at a Target. He led them on a car chase, then took off on foot when he reached the beach in Long Beach. He ran down a flight of stairs to the beach; the pursuing police were far behind him; even the police dog bounding down the stairs wasnt on him yet; they guy posed no danger--no weapon in his hands, facing the other way, running--and plink, plink, plink, they dropped him, dead. The OC Weekly raised about two paragraphs of fuss over it, and the rest of the media ignored it, since cops killing an unarmed suspect is nearly as common as dog bites man stories now.
