Ive noticed an uptick in ugly arguments and hurt feelings in our little community lately. Most of the ugliness revolves around third-rail topics like cause and acceptance. Its got me thinking... Do you think this whole Spectrum concept is doing our kids a disservice? With such a wide array of symptoms, presentations and challenges, is it really ever possible to unite in a common goal and direction? For example, its very hard for the parents of a severely affected nonverbal child who requires 24 hour care and is battling seizures and self-injurious behavior to get on board with the notion that he is just a little quirky and simply needs to be accepted as he is. Similarly, its very hard for a parent raising a fully verbal child who is just a little quirky and socially awkward to accept the notion that he is damaged, broken, ill or impaired. The result is infighting and hurt feelings. Is this inevitable under our current structure and approach to the Autism Spectrum?
