Iwaki city Fukushima opens two swimming beaches from 7/15/2013 to 8/18/2013. Yotsukura swimming beach is newly open this year. It was closed due to 311 effect last year. However they were measuring high level of Cs-134/137 from the sand in Yotsukura swimming beach according to Iwaki city. The municipal government outsourced the analysis for nonprofit organization Iwaki environment lab. The organization took sand samples at 6 locations this January and March. The highest reading was 3,167 Bq/Kg (Cs-134/137) in dry sand. The lowest reading was 47.3 Bq/Kg (Cs-134/137) in dry sand. They concluded in the land side, the deeper it goes, the higher radiation level becomes. On the other hand, in the sea side, the radiation level is higher on the surface. It may suggest that Cesium-134/137 is sinking in the land side but in sea side, radioactive material keeps being washed off and newly accumulated on the surface by seawater. In the opening ceremony of the swimming beach, the municipal government held the Shinto religious services to pray for the safety and also made a “sand park”, where children can play with the sand for the special amusement of this year.
