I’ve heard the opinion of Hmong parents, who are fearful or become upset over the fact that younger generation now days put their elders in homes. Hmong people come from a collectivist culture where we are family/group oriented. The decisions that we make and contemplate on are influenced by those that we love, which include our siblings, parents, grandparents, children, and extended family. But living in countries that are more western influenced, we’ve come to make decisions because of how it will affect us, “me.” Because of this phenomenon, many younger generations are living their lives, leaving aside their elders because they become busy and occupy with their daily duties. Some young Hmong generation are starting to put their parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles in homes. These elders live amongst strangers and are taken care by those that they cannot clearly communicate with. Do the young generations understand the fear that Hmong elders face? Turning old and feeling like they’re a burden to their family? Do young generations understand that being put in a home is probably not what our elders want, but to be able to spend their remaining years with family and friends? Xw
