JACK HAS SPASTIC LEGS Sounds a little harsh doesnt it?? Picu jan 2012 Jack is slowly being bought out of an induced coma..Still on life support.. Jack is initiating his own breath but not finishing each breath for himself the machine is still keeping him alive... Drs have warned us they dont expect jack to wake up, they dont expect jack to be capable of swallowing his own spit.. When an intubated coma patient slowly wakes up the brain would register the alien tube in their throat to which ud want to see their hands try to remove the obstruction.. This isnt expected of jack and neither does it happen.. Jack has not responded to coming out of an induced coma... We are told again we just have to wait... As jack is lay there at times his arms and legs tense in a very ridged motion and are turning inwards.. Looks very uncomfortable ... A group of Drs visit jacks bedspace 3 times daily in picu... Im stood with my dad as the group of drs approach jacks bedspace.. They say hello and continue to look at jacks notes talking amongst themselves... Dr; jack has spastic legs I look at my dad did she just say jack has spastic legs? My dad: mate thats what I thought Id heard her say I walk round my dad to get to the drs.. Excuse me sorry to interrupt but did you just say jack has spastic legs? Dr: I did yes its a medical term still used amongst drs.. The movements jack is showing us in his arms and legs suggest spasticity where the word spastic comes from..they call it hypertonic more so than spastic these days.. The ridged and over tightness to the muscle in limbs combined with jacks scans suggest its at the more severe end of the scale.. We will continue to keep jack comfortable all we can do is wait Spasticity is a neuro/muscular disorder.. Jack has a neuro/muscular disorder.. We all are at risk of a neuro/muscular disorder.. Spasticity.... Be kind... Its not a word that should be used spitefully it could happen to anyone of you just remember that...
