JACKSON TO VISIT FORT VALLEY GEORGIA Fort Valley, Ga., January 23, 2015--One of America’s foremost civil rights, religious and political figures, the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. will focus on voter access, civic engagement and education when he addresses students at the Pettigrew Center on the campus of Fort Valley State University on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 11am. Jackson will be joined by Nick Clements, founder of Magnify Money, a nationally recognized non-profit focused on financial literacy and economic empowerment. As an African-American civil rights activist and Baptist minister, Jackson is the founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. Over the past 40 years, he has played a pivotal role in virtually every movement for empowerment, peace, civil rights, gender equality and economic and social justice. As part of his visit, Jackson will speak to students at Fort Valley Middle School, conduct an organizational meeting to establish a local Rainbow Push chapter and speak at a Public Town Hall meeting scheduled at 7 pm at the Pettigrew Center. The Town Hall, hosted by Rainbow Push and concerned citizens of Fort Valley, will focus on Education, Civic Engagement and Community Relations. This event is free and open to the public. These initiatives are continued efforts to empower the Peach County community on the brink of the tragic deadly shooting of 8-year-old Jaimel Anderson. Rev. Jackson is planning to organize a Middle Georgia Chapter in Peach County, as education, economic development and voter access are important to Reverend Jackson, says Attorney Janice Mathis, Vice President of Rainbow Push Coalition. One way to ensure voter access is by having a voting precinct on the campus of Fort Valley State University. The visit was arranged by Fort Valley native Chuck Miller, a longtime supporter and friend of Rev. Jackson, who also serves on the Atlanta Bureaus Corporate Advisory Council. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition (RPC) is a multi-racial, multi-issue, progressive, international membership organization fighting for social change. RPC was formed in December 1996 by Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. With headquarters in Chicago and offices in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Oakland, RPC works to make the American Dream a reality for all citizens and advocates for peace and justice around the world. They are dedicated to improving the lives of all people by serving as a voice for the voiceless. The mission is to protect, defend, and gain civil rights by leveling the economic and educational playing fields, and to promote peace and justice around the world.
