JERUSALEM-ON-THE-LINE News Update November 29th 2013 JNN NEWS, P.O. Box 7411, Jerusalem 91073, Israel Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your tabernacle. Ps 43:3 LARGEST MENORAH IN THE WORLD TO BE IT IN TEL AVIV: The largest menorah (candelabrum) in the world will be lit in Tel Aviv on the eighth and final night of Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday commemorating the Maccabean revolt which ended the Greek Empires occupation of Israel over 2,000 years ago. Following Greek edicts outlawing Judaism the Maccabees rebelled, successfully expelling the Greeks, rededicating the Second Temple, and establishing their own monarchy. The Hanukkah holiday in particular celebrates the miracle of the menorah in the Temple staying lit for 8 days on enough oil for only 1 day. The menorah, which has been submitted to the Guinness Book of Records, measures in at 92 feet high. The branches of the menorah will shine 9 white light beams until midnight to a height of 6.2 miles where they will be visible from the surrounding region. (Arutz-7) RARE BOOK OF PSALMS SELLS FOR RECORD $14.16 MILLION: This week a rare copy of the Book of Psalms (Tehillim) printed in 1640 was sold in an auction at Sothebys in New York for $14.16 million, making it the most valuable printed book in the world. The Bay Psalm Book is the first book ever printed in what is now the US. The auctioned book, one of 11 surviving copies, was purchased by philanthropist David Rubenstein, who plans to share it with the American public by loaning it to libraries across the country, before putting it on long-term loan at one of them, according to Sothebys. According to the Talmud most of the psalms, known as Tehillim in the original Hebrew, were written by King David who ruled in Israel roughly 3,000 years ago, although some were written by different authors at other times. The Christian Puritans who printed the rare book of psalms intended it to be a more faithful translation into English of the Hebrew original than the versions they brought from England, according to CNN. Regarding the book, David Redden, vice chairman of Sothebys, said its so very valuable because it is the beginning of Western civilization in our country. (INN) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Ps 119: 105 ISRAEL HAS BEST GENDER EQUALITY RECORD IN MIDEAST: Israel on Wednesday received an award for gender equality from the Women in Parliaments Global Forum of the European Parliament for having the best record in the Middle East and North Africa. (J.Post) ISRAEL MEDICAL TEAM LEAVES PHILIPPINES: The Israel Defense Forces emergency medical team left the Philippines 11 days after arriving there to aid typhoon victims. The 148-person medical team vacated the IDFs emergency field hospital in Bogo City this week after treating more than 2,600 patients, including 800 children. The team also conducted 52 surgeries and delivered 36 babies. A European Union delegation replaced the IDF team, which left behind a range of medical supplies, including an X-ray machine and equipment for the delivery of newborns. The Government of Israel also donated $500,000 worth of medicines to the Cebu Provincial Government. Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on Nov. 8, leaving at least 5,000 dead. (JTA) BABY SERIOUSLY INJURED IN TERRORIST ROCK ATTACK: A two-year-old baby was seriously injured Thursday when terrorists hurled rocks at the car she was in, at the entrance to the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood in southern Jerusalem. A Magen David Adom (MDA) team gave the baby initial medical care and took her to Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital. She suffered a serious head injury. Security forces continue to comb the area in search of the terrorists. (INN) Intercede for the full recovery of this small, innocent victim of another brutal terrorist attack in the Jerusalem area, one of many in recent months. Pray against such attacks and for the round-up and detention of those who are perpetrating them. PM VOWS TO CATCH CRIMINALS WHO INJURED BABY: PM Netanyahu took part Thursday in the Hanukkah candle lighting ceremony at the Western Wall and spoke about the terror attack that took place earlier in the evening, in which a two-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries when Muslims threw rocks at the car she was in. The first thing that Id like to do this evening is to send wishes of speedy and full recovery to the small baby girl who was wounded by criminals here in Jerusalem, he said. We will find these criminals and we will bring them to justice. We will safeguard our city. I think you must have noticed in recent days that our security forces are focusing on finding the perpetrators of evil. They succeed in this, and they will succeed in this case, too. Speaking of the Western Wall the Prime Minister also said he was always moved to be in the place where Jewish history was formed to a large extent. This is the Zion we dreamed of returning to, and this is Zion that we have returned to. Since then, we have been busy building our land and our state, and we are always under challenge. (Arutz-7) IDF OPERATION LEADS TO 21 ARRESTS IN ONE WEEK FOR ROAD TERROR ATTACKS: The increasing frequency of rock and firebomb attacks targeting Israeli motorists in Judea and Samaria has led the IDF and police to crack down on road terror. This week, 21 Palestinian Arab suspects were arrested on suspicion of throwing rocks or firebombs. Sixteen remain in custody following questioning, while five who were detained in the Binyamin region, north of Jerusalem, were later released. A statement from the Israel Police said, Police in the Judea and Samaria district, in cooperation with the IDF, will keep working to reduce rock attacks as much as possible. The crackdown follows a particularly serious assault last week, when a firebomb nearly killed a couple as they drove toward Jerusalem. Zachy and Naama Choory escaped their flaming vehicle just before it was consumed by fire, and Naama suffered serious burns. An Israeli woman was wounded on Tuesday after stones were hurled at her car near the Mount of Olives - another in a growing line of nationalistically motivated attacks in Israels capital. Earlier Thursday it was revealed that four Palestinian Arab men from Kotzra had been arrested for committing thefts targeting Israeli Jews in Judea and Samaria. (Arutz-7) UN RINGS IN THE YEAR OF PALESTINE BY PASSING SIX NEW RESOLUTIONS CONDEMNING ISRAEL: The UN General Assembly passed six more resolutions concerning Israel this week, including one that called for Israel to return the Golan Heights to Syria. One of the six resolutions said Israel should cease imposing its jurisdiction on Jerusalem and another one declared 2014 the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This resolution calls on the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People to organize activities to be held during the year. UN Watch president Hillel Neuer said these resolutions and actions by the UN will do nothing to help either the Palestinians or the Israelis on the ground. Were concerned about a new year that will bring escalated politicization of influential UN agencies worldwide, doing nothing to help Palestinians or Israelis on the ground, while inflicting yet further damage to the world bodys effectiveness and credibility, Neuer said. The UNs drumbeat of excessive, disproportionate and one-sided condemnations of Israel causes polarization, threatens to push the parties further apart and is counterproductive to the already fragile peace process. (J.Post) CONCERN VATICAN MAY TAKE OVER PART OF MOUNT ZION: There are growing apprehensions that a sensitive religious site on Mount Zion, may be relinquished to Vatican control. Rabbi Eldad Shmueli, a local Jerusalem activist voiced his concerns days ago, stating that there has been an increase in elaborate additions to the area in question. He suspected that preparations may be in process for the visit of Pope Francis scheduled for May. Other rabbis, connected to the Diaspora Yeshiva have expressed similar concerns. Over the years there has been many attempts by non-Jewish elements to purchase the property. King Davids Tomb is located just outside the walls of the Old City in the Mount Zion area. The specific property in question is referred to by Christians as the Last Supper Room, a small room on the second floor of a larger area that houses the King Davids Tomb prayer space, the Presidents room and other historic sites. A special Shavuot celebration is held at the adjacent open field every year. (Arutz-7) CHIEF RABBIS URGE JEWISH PEOPLE TO PRAY FOR RAIN: Both Chief Rabbis - R Yitzhak Yosef and R David Lau - have released a letter urging the public to say extra prayers for rainfall. The weather has remained sunny and warm in Israel over the past several months, delighting residents - but potentially damaging Israels economy and agriculture. The winter rain, when plentiful, sustains the Israeli economy through the next year. The Rabbis have called for the Jewish people to capitalize on the fact that this is the traditional season to pray for rainfall and to add to their prayers accordingly. (Arutz-7) Pray with Israel that this years rainfall will yield abundant water for the needs and well-being of the country. He gives rain on the earth and sends water on the fields.
