JESSICA RUSSELL FLINT by Alexandra Findlay Vivacious exuberance and effervescent joy are the core sensibilities coursing through the work of young British artist Jessica Russell Flint; her lust for life is palpable in each and every one of her dramatic designs and final pieces, from the illustrated snow leopard wallpaper to those pink flamingo travel bags, these green lobster silk scarves, and her fabulous galloping horse cushions. ‘I love life and people,’ says the Exeter University and Central St. Martins graduate, stressing that her brand’s raison d’être is to encourage the rest of the world to do the same. Their official motto says a lot about this joyful bunch: ‘Can you see beyond the end of your nose?’ Describing her early career days spent working in advertising, Flint says: ‘People would sometimes take tiny things way too seriously. It was frustrating. Enjoy life, embrace life and colour, and feel comfortable and happy. No matter how naff that sounds – it just helps you to get through the bad things!’ The granddaughter of watercolour artist Sir William Russell Flint (good genes) is, indeed, fanatical about colour. She combines beautifully bright ones with bold printed images of, chiefly, wild animals (roar) to turn very ordinary everyday objects – a sarong, a napkin, a pillowcase, a notebook, a wash bag – into something seriously special, lip-lickingly luxurious and defiantly limited edition. ‘I’ve always loved colour, textures and bold images; mixing the striking with something more subtle is how I like it. Balance is key.’
