JOSEPHS SKELETON STORY HITS THE DAILY EXPRESS This is one of the UKs most prominent and widely distributed newspapers and will reach worldwide readership. For the record, I never agreed to,lead a campaign, and I wasnt asked to. That said, I do believe the Hospital has had the skeleton for long enough and also, that it should be laid to rest. I am quietly pleased about the so-called campaign, but understandably, am quite nervous at being so much in the public eye. Im sure Leicester would take every precaution, to safeguard the grave against thuggery, if the skeleton were to arrive in their capable hands. Although I have been quoted as, Chairman, Friends of Joseph Merrick, I made it quite clear to the Leicester Mercury, (who began the story, on the back of our plaque laying for Mary Jane), that my opinion was a personal one, and, I did not speak on behalf of the Group. It wouldnt have been right to do so. You each have the right to your personal view and, after all, this is no straightforward matter - it is a very hunan, spiritual, theological one.
